Tips

1. Boek: Marge Piercy - Woman on the Edge of Time

waarom? “This is a feminist sci-fi book written in 1976 in which the protagonist moves between two realities: 1970s New York City and a utopian future with an extremely progressive society. Piercy describes the spaces, objects and rituals of this future with such richness of detail and internal cohesiveness that it really feels real, or at least possible. I think every feminist architect should read this book to expand and explore what we consider to be our own possible futures.”

2. Artikel: Dulmini Perera - Designing in the Context of Time: Why Annetta Pedretti’s cybernetic-architectural practice at 25 Princelet Street matters

waarom? “This is a recently published article by my colleague Dulmini Perera. It does a beautiful job of highlighting the importance and conceptual richness of Annetta Pedretti’s activist practice, which finds its continuation at House of Annetta in London. Pedretti’s work is endlessly creative, generous and very original in its engagement with cybernetics and systems thinking. When I was in architecture school, I learned about men who used cybernetics in their work such as Cedric Price or Stewart Brand, but no teacher ever spoke of Pedretti. I hope Perera’s text changes that.”

3. Boek: Denise Ferreira da Silva - Unpayable Debt

waarom? “Denise Ferreira da Silva is a philosopher and artist who gives us models to interpret and speak of modernity connecting race, gender, value, law and even physics. This book brings many concepts that Ferreira da Silva had been working with in separate texts into a single robust work of theory. The text is conceptually dense but it pays off to stay with it, read it slowly and come back to it a couple of times. If you feel like decolonial theory deals with the theme of race insufficiently, this is the book for you.”
