18. Shadow client

Architectuur dient meestal de machtigste groepen. Maar wat betekent het om te ontwerpen voor wie niet meteen zichtbaar is? Adeola Enigbokan 91 hanteert het concept van de ‘shadow client’ om te komen tot een participatieve architectuur met de nadruk op inclusie en een ethische ontwerppraktijk. Tijdens een PAF gespreksavond vertelde ze meer over het concept. 92

“Traditional architectural practices often overlook hidden stakeholders, or ‘shadow clients’, such as marginalized communities and non-human entities.” Enigbokan benadrukt het belang van het betrekken van deze perspectieven in het ontwerpproces.

“I think about the shadow client as a tool, a design device, which can expand your role as a designer. It asks you to take into account all the stakeholders, human and non-human, who are not officially at the table in the design process. The shadow client is also a way to go beyond the brief that you’ve been given and a way to help the work reach its full potential, to try to imagine and anticipate who your work might touch and how far your work could go.”

Enigbokan toonde een casestudy van het Coltsville-project in Connecticut. Een plan voor een ‘nationaal park’ rond een industriële stad, op een historische site waar vroeger een vuurwapenfabriek gevestigd was. Daar identificeerden ze een lokale groep, Mothers Against Gun Violence, als cruciale belanghebbende die aanvankelijk over het hoofd gezien werd.

De schaduwcliënt is dus een hulpmiddel en tool bij het ontwerpen om alle stakeholders in overweging te nemen, ook diegene die je normaal niet bereikt. Dat verrijkt en verbreedt het ontwerpproces. Kijk dus altijd verder dan de opdracht die je krijgt en breid je rol als designer uit. Anticipeer op wie je zal beïnvloeden met je werk. Maar Enigbokan licht toe dat de ‘shadow client’ pas echt een stem krijgt als die ook de resultaten van je project daadwerkelijk mee kan bepalen: “You also want to let the shadow client help you to determine the deliverables, to have them truly change the project results if necessary.” 93
